Magnetic Names James Green as New Chief Executive Officer
Former Executive from 24/7 Real Media, Disney & Sabela Media to take search retargeting leader to its next stage
NEW YORK—October 20, 2011—Search retargeting leader Magnetic today announced that it has named industry veteran James Green as chief executive officer. With over two decades of executive experience within digital companies, Green has successfully led four companies to acquisition as CEO. Green will focus on driving overall company expansion, building out Magnetic’s search retargeting infrastructure and solidifying Magnetic as the partner of choice for many Fortune 500 companies, including more than 90 leading agencies, ad networks and demand side platforms (DSPs). Green joins at a key point in Magnetic’s evolution as the company continues to pave the way for the search retargeting category, citing 438% year over year growth.
“James has a proven track record of capitalizing on growing market opportunities across the digital industry,” said Magnetic founder Josh Shatkin-Margolis. “We’re thrilled to have someone of Green’s caliber join Magnetic. With his entrepreneurial background and experience building digital organizations into sustainable corporations, we will deepen Magnetic’s roots in the search retargeting category and amplify our growth.”
Mr. Green began his career in the entertainment industry and spent eight years with The Walt Disney Company (Buena Vista International) culminating in his appointment as the General Manager of the Japanese market. From Disney, Mr. Green moved to Pixar Animation Studios where he worked for Steve Jobs as the vice president of marketing and new business development.
In 1998, Green became a founding partner and CEO of Sabela Media, an Internet ad serving company. After an explosive 18 months of revenue growth, Sabela Media became the subject of a bidding war and ultimately sold in January 2000 for $70 million to 24/7 Real Media. Green remained with 24/7 Real Media for nine months as president of technology solutions.
In October 2000, Green became CEO of GiantBear where he successfully launched new products with major carriers (Cingular, Rogers AT&T and others), before selling the business to InfoSpace in March 2002. After GiantBear, Green became CEO of PVI, a virtual advertising company, which he took private in 2003 before it was sold to Cablevision in May of 2005. Green then joined Giant Realm, a vertical ad network, as CEO in January 2007 and sold the company to Burst Media in October 2009.
In November 2010, Green fulfilled his lifelong dream of traveling around the world on his sailboat with his wife and two children. Green departed from New York City and sailed to Bermuda, then onto the Caribbean before crossing the Atlantic Ocean in May 2011, where he traveled throughout the Aegean Sea.
“During my year of sailing, I had plenty of time to think about my next venture within digital advertising, and was drawn to the growing category of retargeting,” said Green. “Magnetic’s great market position, coupled by its explosive growth and room for innovation presents me with the unique opportunity to continue my passion for technology. I’m excited to be joining the great team at Magnetic and look forward to continued record-breaking growth.”
Founder and previous CEO Josh-Shatkin Margolis will remain active within Magnetic, serving on the board of directors to continue to provide the vision that is the foundation of Magnetic and focusing on the technology that has driven the success of the company.
